Welcome to The Nest...

...and our very own web page for family and friends to see what we've been doing in our class.  You can even add your comments at the bottom of the page if you like!

Autumn 2018

Visit to St Johns Museum.

As part of our topic we visited St Museum in Warwick to learn about life 100 years ago. We started the day by helping in the laundry, making soap and washing clothes.  We then compared the houses of rich and poor people, looking for similarities and differences. Finally after lunch we looked at a range of toys identifying those which were new, old or replicas.

Welcome back to Year 1 and welcome to our new Reception children!
The children have all settled in well and are getting used to the new routines.
Our topic this term is memories.  We have started by looking at their memory boxes and will then go onto look at the memories of family member, especially grandparents.  To mark the anniversary of the end of WW1 we will be looking at the lives of people living 100 years ago, especially those living in Culworth.

Keep an eye on the Nest webpage as we create new memories this term.

The Next class 2017-2018

Nest trip to Oxford Natural History Museum June 2018

We had a lovely time at the natural history museum, discovering all about dinosaurs and fossils. We had a special worksheet which sent us on a hunt around the collection to find all sorts of fascinating specimens and objects . We finished with an alfresco lunch by the enormous cedar tree in the museum garden.

The Nest enjoyed water colour landscape painting in the Glebe during their Tuesday art sessions. There were some brilliant paintings, everyone enjoyed using the techniques they have been learning about over the last few weeks, especially painting outside in the sunshine.

Autumn 2017
This term we are thinking about 'Ourselves'.  We will be talking about our family, our school community and our local community.  The children will bring in their own memory boxes and photos as a starting point for this topic.

Summer Term 2017

This term our topic is Along the Riverbank and will start with a geographical focus. We will travel from the River Thames and River Avon across the continents to the River Nile before stepping back in time to visit the Ancient Egyptians!

Spring Term 2017

Spring 2017 - our topic this term is ‘LONDON!’
This term the Nest will be learning all about London past and present. They will even get the chance to go to London to see first hand what all the excitement is about. They will look at all of the famous landmarks and learn about how the London skyline has changed over the years. As well as this, the children will be learning all about the Great Fire of London. They will see and hear of the impact that it had on landmarks such as Saint Paul's Cathedral. They will be learning about Samuel Pepys and writing their own versions of his diary. What would you have done if you had been in London at the time of the Great Fire? Watch this space for all the GREAT work that the children will be doing.

Autumn Term 2015

Our topic this term is ‘Where my wellies take me’.
The children talked about what they like doing in their wellies and we listed all the places, where they thought we would need to wear them – the farm being one of them.
We are going to look at farming today and in the past, so if you have any old implements or photos lurking in a barn or attic somewhere that would help inspire us, please could we have a look at them in school.
As you are aware, I am trying to arrange a visit to Ted Tim’s farm in Stutchbury, so that the children can see a modern, working farm and we are also investigating a possible visit to Cogges farm, to give the children a taste of farming life in the Victorian times.

Summer Term 2015

Our topic this term is 'Life In the Ocean'.
This term, the geographical aspect of our topic will take us from the seas around Great Britain to the oceans of the world.  The children will learn that the sea has different features just as dry land.  They will look at the world map and work out which seas are warm and which are cold.  They will watch DVDs to learn about marine life and use the internet and books to create their own fact files.  We will ‘dive’ down to explore the sea bed and ‘swim’ up the side of an underwater mountain, coming to rest on the golden shores of our own fantasy island.

The children will also learn about Grace Darling and Jacques Cousteau and their importance as influential characters in history.

Spring Term 2015

Just in case you have missed the ‘subtle’ clues around the room, welcome to Africa!

African animals will be the stimulus for all of our writing outside of Read, Write, Inc.  We will be using non-fiction books and the internet to find out about various animals and the children will write fact files, poetry and their own traditional African tales throughout the term.

The children will learn that Africa is a continent and know how many countries there are within it.  We will discuss the equator, talk about hot and cold countries and focus on some of Africa’s physical features ie. desert, savannah, jungle.  We will research the animals found in these habitats and learn how to classify them into mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, carnivores, herbivores and omnivores.  We will also talk about endangered animals.

Autumn 2014

Our topic this term is ‘A basketful of Memories’.

Thank you for preparing a ‘memory bag’ with your child. – the children are enjoying sharing these memories and are extremely confident, when speaking in front of each other.

As a history topic, the children will be focusing on theirs and other people’s memories, as they develop their understanding of the past, the changes that time brings, as well as learning about timelines.
