We like to follow the children's interests in our planning in order to encourage them to engage as much as possible. We follow the new and updated Early Years Curriculum (September 2021).
We provide a range of adult initiated activities daily that purposefully develop key skills in all of our children. We take part in 'Feral Friday!' where we explore nature and the great outdoors. Our older preschool and Reception children are introduced to phonics and Maths activities in a fun but progressive manner, right from the start of their time with us.
We have daily time in the playground, school garden and the hall. We also have access to a large open space outside (The Glebe) where the children have the opportunity to run more freely and develop their gross motor skills accordingly. They can therefore explore the great outdoors in a safe and supervised manner.
What do we want to achieve for our children in EYFS?
Our EYFS provision is structured to cover each aspect of the Statutory framework for the early years foundation stage (EYFS). We want our children to develop their personal, social and emotional skills in line with the vision of the school: ‘do unto others as you would have done unto you.’ (Matthew:7.12).
We want the children to become independent learners with an attitude that they will succeed to fulfil all their dreams and ambitions. They will foster the joy of learning and support others in this. We recognise that learning is not always an easy process: support and guidance will be provided by experienced and caring practitioners so that children can achieve their full potential.
We want children to become well-rounded individuals with a belief in themselves. From the start of their learning Journey at Culworth Primary Academy our pupils will learn to have faith in God.
How will we achieve this?
At Culworth Primary Academy we follow a child-centred approach for EYFS provision. We understand the developmental needs of learners and structure tasks to support the development of a child using the Development matters guidance. When working with children in continuous provision or in group teaching sessions, we aim to understand the child as a learner, understand their strengths and support them to move on via adult support and independent tasks. We recognise the importance of being in the environment with the children and engaging in talk and play based on the child’s interests.
Our continuous provision is set up in a way that children can access it independently, giving time and space to engage in experimenting with ideas. This is balanced with whole class and small group teaching of fundamental subjects when in the reception year (phonics, writing and Maths). We promote the love of reading and offer children plentiful opportunities to listen and talk about books, visit the school library and engage in activities based on language rich texts.

What does early years provision look like and how will it support my child now and in the future?
Achieving in EYFS provides a strong foundation to life. Personal, Social and Emotional development in the EYFS is pivotal to lifelong successes. Children who can express their emotions and talk about them, will be happier and more positive as they move through school. Children build on the skills in phonics to develop their reading throughout the school. Early Maths skills support understanding in Maths throughout the school.
Children are discreetly assessed on a regular basis and we identify any pupils whose progress is a concern, in any area of the EYFS. From this, we build in additional support using the small steps guidance to support appropriate development; seeking guidance from the SENco as necessary. We believe quick intervention will support everyone to achieve.

It shows deliberate choices we make about our learning environment and the ways in which we structure key activities and areas of learning, to fully support the development of the whole child, considering independence, self-learning opportunities and cross curricular links, to ensure children make connections in their knowledge.
