Welcome to The Curie Class...

...and our very own web page for family and friends to see what we've been doing in our class.
The name Marie Curie lives on today as the name of a well-known charity that supports those living with terminal illness, but it is the original Marie Curie who we have to thank for her huge contribution to the fight to cure cancer. Throughout her career in scientific research, Marie Curie's determination and perseverance led to numerous different discoveries that we still use in medicine today.

In the Curie class, we hope to have just as much determination as our namesake. We leave you with a quote that highlights how we aim to live and learn:

"Life is not easy for any of us. But what of that? We must have perseverance and above all confidence in ourselves."

Autumn 2020 - Me and My World

Summer 2020 - Home Learning Week 11 - 6th July

Maths Learning for 6th July
Dominoes!
Here's a website with some good ideas for playing with dominoes: https://mathcurious.com/2019/10/21/math-play-and-learn-with-dominoes/
You could also play Build a Train (good for practise in Year 1): https://mathcurious.com/2020/05/13/learn-and-play-with-dominoes-3/
Or Build a Pyramid: https://mathcurious.com/2020/05/12/play-and-learn-with-dominoes-2/

Summer 2020 - Home Learning Week 10 - 29th June

Maths Learning for 29th June
Number bonds!
Use large number cards or write numbers out in an outside space. You will also need 2 dice.
Lay the numbers 1 to 12 out in the space. Throw two dice. If the answer is 7, then you turn over all the numbers that are number bonds for that number – i.e. 7, 6 and 1, 5 and 2, 3 and 4. You are left with 8, 9, 10, 11, 12 face up. Your score is the total of the cards facing up. Number bonds for 8 would be 8, 1 and 7, 2 and 6, 3 and 5. But 4 would stay facing up with 9, 10, 11 and 12.
Play this for a bit. What is the worst number to throw to give the worst (highest) score? What is the best?
Extend this activity by using three dice and numbers to 18.
How else can we extend this?
Handwriting for 29th June
Keep on with those capital letters! Be sure to continue practising any letters that you still struggle to form correctly. We all have letters we struggle with!

Summer 2020 - Home Learning Week 9 - 22nd June

Maths Learning for 22nd June
Can you do it too?
The website NRich has lots of open-ended maths investigations for children of all ages. This week, I've chosen an activity that links to the Olympics and is fantastically active! Here's the link to the full investigation https://nrich.maths.org/8327
There are also some handy links to websites that will give statistics on Hammer and Discus activities in the Olympics for children to compare themselves to. https://nrich.maths.org/8327/note.
Handwriting for 22nd June
Continue to practise capital letters with the next set!

Summer 2020 - Home Learning Week 8 - 15th June

Maths Learning for 15th June
Uno!
If you have a pack of Uno cards at home, there are so many games you can play! We've been using them this week at school and playing the game helps with number recognition, taking turns, the concept of playing fairly, understanding rules and so much more.
For more ideas on how to use Uno cards, check out this website:
https://picklebums.com/10-maths-games-can-play-uno-cards/
Handwriting for 15th June
I've added 2 sets of Capital Letters this week due to the issues I had uploading the videos last week. There are no descriptions included in Kinetic Letters for the Capital letters so I have talked through the formation using the Kinetic Letter vocabulary, but I have not included the text on the videos this week. Enjoy practising your Straight Lines and Curved Lines Capitals!
For a challenge, why not try to include these capital letters when you're writing - it's never too late to make sure you're using capital letters at the beginning of sentences!

Summer 2020 - Home Learning Week 7 - 8th June

Maths Learning for 8th June
Ball Games!
This week has been inspired by the games that we've been playing back in school. Lots of socially distanced throwing and catching games. Simply,  you can count up how many times you can throw or catch the ball without dropping it. Or you could:
  • Count up in 2s, 3s, 5s or 10s.
  • Say a times table question and the answer
  • Count forwards or backwards but every time you say a multiple of 2, 3, 5, or 10 say splat instead - this one is tricky but lots of fun!
There are loads of ways you can use balls to help with maths. See if you can come up with your own and let me know what you do!

Summer 2020 - Home Learning Week 6 - 1st June

Maths Learning for 1st June
What's my number?
This can either be an active game or a mental game. If you want to play it actively, you will need to draw a big number square with chalk on an outside space. Once you have your number square, you can start playing!
A partner (you could play with siblings or a parent) needs to think of a number and then you need to ask questions to work out what number it is. For example, you could ask is it odd or even? Is it in the 5 times table? Does it have 3 tens? You can only ask yes or no questions! Once you think you know the answer, run to the number! Or you could squirt the number with a water pistol if you have one at home. Or throw a bean bag at it! The possibilities are endless.

Handwriting for 1st June
We're practising the final family of lower case letters this week - the Slider Family! There are some tricky ones so make sure you practise carefully - particularly with the z and the k!

Summer 2020 - Home Learning Week 5 - 18th May

Maths Learning for 18th May
Playing with cards
There are so many uses for a deck of cards and they are a great opportunity to practice maths skills and have fun!
I could lay out the cards like the picture opposite.
Then play I spy. You could say to the other player, ‘I spy a pair of cards with a total of 10.’ Your cards need to be next to each other for this to work! In this example, the 2 cards would be the 7 of diamonds and the 3 of hearts.
There are lots of games on this website https://www.weareteachers.com/math-card-games/
Please share any games that you can come up with too!

Picture
Handwriting 18th May
This week, you can practise the Fisher Family and the Squirter. The letter g appears in the Fisher Family and the Abracadabra Family, but don't let that stop you practising twice - there are still lots of wonky g's that appear in writing!

Summer 2020 - Home Learning Week 4 - 11th May

Maths Learning for 11th May
Notorious number lines
Make a number line outside using chalk. This can be a number line from 0 – 20. It could be a number line that goes all the way to 100 if space allows! Choose a number and then find objects outside or from the house and represent that number on the number line
Use your number line to practice adding or subtracting numbers. Use your chalk to make jumps either forwards or backwards along the number line.
(A tip for parents – progression from easy to tricky
start with single + single/single – single
Move on to 2 digit + single digit/ 2 digit – single digit
Then 2 digit + tens number/2 digit – tens number
Then 2 digit + 2 digit number/2 digit 2 digit number. Remember to start with numbers that don’t cross over the tens boundary.
And don’t worry if some of this is too tricky – lots of this list is only expected to be taught in year 2)

Picture
Handwriting 11th May
This week it is time to practise the Window Cleaner Family. There are only 4 letters in this family and they look rather easy. Just be careful that you start each letter from the right place and leave a gap between the letter and the dot on the i!

Summer 2020 - Home Learning Week 3 - 4th May

 Maths learning for 4th May
Minute madness!! Close your eyes and see if you can count a minute in your head. Use a timer to see how close you  can get. This is tricker than it looks!
Now play some ‘minute to win it games.’ There are lots of these online if you search for ‘minute to win it games.’ You could count how many star jumps you can do in a minute. You could see how many socks you can pair together in a minute. How many times can you write your name in a minute? How many number bond or times table questions can you answer in a minute? The opportunities are endless!
Please share with us some of things that you did in a minute.

Handwriting for 4th May
This week, you can practise number formation. I've separated the numbers into 'push' numbers in the Jumper family and 'pull' numbers in the Abracadabra family. You might find some of the numbers easy to form but you can pause the video at tricky numbers to practise - especially if there's any numbers that you like to write backwards! You know who you are!

Summer 2020 - Home Learning Week 2 - 27th April

Maths learning for 27th April
Estimation jars – ask your parent or carer to fill up a transparent jar or box with items from around the house. These can be fewer larger objects or lots of little objects depending on how tricky you want the activity to be!
  • Estimate how many items you think are in the jar. Estimate means to make a sensible guess after looking carefully – you can’t just say any number that you think of! Once you have made an estimate, count how many items there are. You could group the items into groups of 2, 5 or 10 to make it easier for you to count them.
  • How close were you? What is the difference between your number and the actual number? Remember, finding the difference means calculating how many are left when you subtract the smaller number from the larger number.
Handwriting for 27th April
This week, you can practise the Abracadabra Family.
If you've practise your letters and they are perfectly formed, perfectly spaced and sitting on the line, try to think of some words that use the Abracadabra letters. Can you write the words neatly?
Can you use the words in a sentence that is written neatly?

Summer 2020 - Home Learning Week 1 - 20th April

Here you will find ideas and suggestions to help you whilst you work with your child at home. Ideas will be posted weekly, including videos and a document with suggestions for many curriculum content areas that you can access at a time suitable for you.
Maths learning for 20th April
Roll a dice to make a single digit number, or roll twice to make a 2 digit number. There are then so many different activities you can do!
  • Compare numbers. Put multiple numbers in order from largest to smallest. Is the number you rolled greater or smaller than your previous number? You could play a game – who can make the biggest number with numbers they have rolled.
  • Add the rolls together. You could race to 50 or 100 adding on the single digit numbers together each time.
  • Double the number rolled. This can be done with single digits and then with 2 digit numbers
  • Number bonds – what can we add to make 10? What can we add to make 20?
  • Multiply the number rolled by 2, 5 or 10 (suitable more for year 2)
Let me know if you think of any other games to play with dice and I can share them with other parents too!

Handwriting for 20th April
Here are some videos to explain how to form the 'Jumper Family' letters using the Kinetic Letters descriptions as we do in school. If you're forming all letters correctly, practise using them when writing sentences as neatly as you can.

Spring 2020 - Africa is not a Country

The Curie class have been working extremely hard this term, learning lots about Africa; its geography, its people and its animals particularly. We started the term learning how to sew and stitched the name of different African countries on to their fabric outline.
Once we had learnt the names of some of the countries that are in Africa, we found Africa on a map and located some of the countries. As a project, we made huts that look similar to some of the homes that certain tribes live in in Africa.
Picture
We have learnt lots about different tribes in Africa. We have been visited by someone from Ghana, who taught us some stories, songs and dances from his country. We have made necklaces using repeating patterns. We have also learnt about Fair Trade products and ways that we can support people who live in Africa. Have a look below at some of these things.

Autumn 2019 - Reach for the Stars

Key Stage 1 have been settling in to their new classroom and learning lots about this term's topic. Some of the children in Curie class could even take a turn at being the teacher as they already know so much about space and the universe around us!
We have also been learning in our role play area where there is zero gravity - luckily we have gravity boots to keep us grounded while we're in there!
