The name Marie Curie lives on today as the name of a well-known charity that supports those living with terminal illness, but it is the original Marie Curie who we have to thank for her huge contribution to the fight to cure cancer. Throughout her career in scientific research, Marie Curie's determination and perseverance led to numerous different discoveries that we still use in medicine today.
In the Curie class, we hope to have just as much determination as our namesake. We leave you with a quote that highlights how we aim to live and learn: "Life is not easy for any of us. But what of that? We must have perseverance and above all confidence in ourselves." |

Maths Learning for 18th May
Playing with cards There are so many uses for a deck of cards and they are a great opportunity to practice maths skills and have fun! I could lay out the cards like the picture opposite. Then play I spy. You could say to the other player, ‘I spy a pair of cards with a total of 10.’ Your cards need to be next to each other for this to work! In this example, the 2 cards would be the 7 of diamonds and the 3 of hearts. There are lots of games on this website https://www.weareteachers.com/math-card-games/ Please share any games that you can come up with too! |

Maths Learning for 11th May
Notorious number lines Make a number line outside using chalk. This can be a number line from 0 – 20. It could be a number line that goes all the way to 100 if space allows! Choose a number and then find objects outside or from the house and represent that number on the number line Use your number line to practice adding or subtracting numbers. Use your chalk to make jumps either forwards or backwards along the number line. (A tip for parents – progression from easy to tricky start with single + single/single – single Move on to 2 digit + single digit/ 2 digit – single digit Then 2 digit + tens number/2 digit – tens number Then 2 digit + 2 digit number/2 digit 2 digit number. Remember to start with numbers that don’t cross over the tens boundary. And don’t worry if some of this is too tricky – lots of this list is only expected to be taught in year 2) |

This week, you can practise the Abracadabra Family. If you've practise your letters and they are perfectly formed, perfectly spaced and sitting on the line, try to think of some words that use the Abracadabra letters. Can you write the words neatly? Can you use the words in a sentence that is written neatly? |

The Curie class have been working extremely hard this term, learning lots about Africa; its geography, its people and its animals particularly. We started the term learning how to sew and stitched the name of different African countries on to their fabric outline.
Once we had learnt the names of some of the countries that are in Africa, we found Africa on a map and located some of the countries. As a project, we made huts that look similar to some of the homes that certain tribes live in in Africa.
