Welcome to The Keller Class...

Welcome to Keller Class - Helen Keller, born on June 27, 1880 in Tuscumbia, Alabama. At 19 months old, Keller contracted an unknown illness which left her both deaf and blind. She lived, as she recalled in her autobiography, "at sea in a dense fog."

Despite this she became the first deaf-blind person to earn a Bachelor of Arts degree. She went on to campaign for many causes which she deeply believed in and was a prolific author. Her attitude in overcoming adversity in order to campaign for the rights of others is one that reflects many of the Christian Values that form the frame work and foundation for life at Culworth Academy.

Reading

We encourage the children to develop a love for reading, though daily reading lessons, adult reading volunteers, opportunities for children to 'recommend a read' to each other as well as staff sharing books which they are enjoying.

Here are a list of books we will be looking at and reading this term.

Here are some recommended books for year 3.

Useful links and Home learning

  • At Culworth, we believe it is useful for all children to read for 10 minutes per day, to engage with TTRockstars and to practise their spellings.

As a result, we provide links to additional learning for those parents who feel their children would benefit from this.

  • Times Tables Rockstars
  • White Rose Parent Workbooks

Sports events

Through our link with Chenderit, a local secondary school, children at Culworth are able to attend sporting events throughout the year. Please check the School Newsletter for a link to sign your child up for these events.

What have we been learning in topic this term?

We have been looking at Prehistoric Britain. We have looked at the Stone Age and looked closely at Stonehenge. We discussed how we thought it was built and why it is a special historical site. We even had a go at building Stonehenge! We have been discovering the three different Stone Ages; Paleolithic, Mesolithic and Neolithic too.

We have looked at The Stone Age, The Iron Age and finally The Iron Age. We have learned about the similarities and differences between the three stages. During our Iron Age lesson, we looked at the Celts and what life was like for them. Our task was to make Celtic shields. We are very proud of them!

Science

This term we have been investigating rocks. We have tested whether rocks are hard or soft and impermeable or permeable. We have looked at how different rocks are made and discovered that rocks are either Igneous, Sedimentary or Metamorphic. In addition, we have been looking at fossils and how they are made over a long time.  We looked at how different fossils such as Mould, Cassat and Trace fossils are made. During one science lesson, we made our own mould fossils out of coffee, flour and salt. They looked really good!

English

In writing this term, we have been looking at and writing character descriptions. We looked at our model of the Iron man and then chose our own characters to write descriptions about. We made sure we included; a title, subheadings, expanded noun phrases, subordinating and co-ordinating conjunctions and similes. We have worked very hard on these! Take a look at some of our creations!
